Existing Driver Training

Existing PCV drivers who already hold a vocational licence on 10th September 2008 or existing LGV drivers holding the licence on  10th September 2009 are exempt from the initial Driver CPC. This is known as acquired rights.

These existing drivers must complete a total of 35 hours Periodic Training within the 5 years of these dates. Again this is only required you are using their licence professionally. If you are driving professionally then you MUST have completed the full Driver CPC qualification. To achieve this qualification you must have carried out your training at an approved centre such as those run by Cambrian training Services.

Please note the training will be tailored to your specific industry and job. You do not have to attend all the 35 hours in one go but you must attend up to 7 hours at one time. You can therefore choose if you want to do 5 lots of 7 hours, do the 35 hours at one go or indeed any variance of the above with a total of the 35 hours.

A Note of Warning

Operators could choose to leave all of the training for their existing drivers until 2013.

Cambrian Training strongly recommends against this.

There is a limited training supply for the sector and if there is a large hike in demand at the last minute this is likely to drive up the costs of training.
